Project Summary:

This is a case of a 24 years old young boy who was working as a delivery boy in Dubai. His spinal cord got injured in a road accident. He lost sensations in lower part of the body since then. Both his lower limbs are paralysed. His father died a few years ago leaving him to be the only male member in the family who is unable to do anything now. He has a mother and a sister only. Help is required for his treatment.

    • 18 Feb 2021: Cheque Issued to his sister for admission fee and private transportation to AFIRM (Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine).
    • 23 Feb 2021: Documentation completed.
    • 27 Feb 2021: COVID test done for patient and attendant.
    • 01 Mar 2021: Admitted to AFIRM.
    • 05 Mar 2021: Request to bank initiated to open his personal account.
    • 15 Mar 2021: Discharged by AFIRM as they have no special treatment to heal the injury. Did 10 cases but no results so stopped.
    • 16 Mar 2021:AFBMTC (Armed Forces Bone Marrow Transplant Centre) advised to check after 1 month for stem cell therapy. At the moment they have discontinued this therapy since the cases done so far have not given positive results. They mentioned they are in the process of starting a trial procedure regarding stem cell therapy for these type of spinal cord disorders. Since FDA or certified agencies have not approved these procedures because of no convincing results they cannot ethically offer the patient a treatment that costs so much and has no results and not even approved or certified. However, they are carrying out trial procedures but it needs an approval by their institution which is in process.
    • 16 Mar 2021: Arranged for consultation at a private facility in Islamabad "Institution for Regenerative Medicine" who will charge about Rs 1.8 million for the procedure. They have requested a fresh MRI first. The patient was sent back to his home in Multan as his attendant packed up and left him alone.
    • 19 Mar 2021: Sent to Pakistan MRI center in Multan for MRI. Since he had fixation surgery with titanium alloy rods and screws, they are trying to find out if MRI can be done in this case due to compatibility issues. Patient has mailed Rashid Hospital Dubai for info. MRI will be done when info on compatibility of rods with MRI is available else it is considered risky.
    • 25 Mar 2021: MRI done by Pakistan MRI in Multan. Report reveals myelopathic changes. Due to artifact complete evaluation not possible but cord appears severely thinned out due to chronic myelopathic changes.
    • 26 Mar 2021: Sent MRI on whatsapp to the concerned doctor of "Institution for Regenerative Medicine" but he said it was not clear. Advised to contact after 2 months.
    • 27 Mar 2021: MRI Evaluation done in Lahore by Dr. Qasim Bashir (Nero physician), Dr Amir Aziz (Orthopaedic surgeon) and Dr Tanveer Zubeiri (Radiologist). Seems like the damage is irreversible.
    • 31 Mar 2021: Sent printed MRI films by post to the concerned doctor of "Institution for Regenerative Medicine". He said some other doctor will do laminectomy first then he will evaluate.
    • 01 Apr 2021: Requested officially from "Institution for Regenerative Medicine" in Islamabad to give in writing officially (1) Procedure that will be carried out (2) Prognosis in % (3) How many cases of spinal cord injury with paraplegia have been done so far by them (4) What has been their recovery rate for spinal cord injury with paraplegia. They requested 2-3 days to issue the official response.
    • 19 Apr 2021: BMTC was contacted after 1 month as advised. They are still waiting for institutional approval for stem cell therapy.
    • 27 Apr 2021: Reply from Institution for Regenerative Medicine does not answer the addressed queries. Will wait for BMTC response.
